Chapter Nine

“Will you watch the boys for a few hours this morning?” Melissa asked, as they sat at a table in the crowded café, enjoying a home-style breakfast of sausage, hash brown potatoes and pancakes. “I’d like to spend a little time at the local library. There may be some interesting stories about women in this area that I could work into my book.” She saw the flicker of a frown cross his face. “Did you have something else to do?”

“I just need to make some phone calls and check in at the office, but I can do that later today,” he said quickly, unable to turn her down. After all that had happened, she deserved a little time to herself. He marveled that there was no sign of yesterday’s trauma in her manner or easy smile. She continued to amaze him with her ability to adjust and accept a situation that would have thrown most women into a tailspin. “Checking out the library sounds like a good idea.”

“Are you sure? I know you’re feeling a lot of pressure over the delay.”

“I’ll get a handle on it,” he reassured her, even as he thought of the work piling up on his desk. His secretary would be having a fit, trying to reschedule appointments and fielding all kinds of questions that only he could answer. As soon as they towed the car into town and checked it out, he wanted to get on the road again. He’d leave Melissa and the boys, and head back to Denver as soon as possible.

“Why don’t you take advantage of the situation?” Melissa asked him, seeing the tense set of his jaw.

He looked puzzled. “What do you mean?”

“Nobody knows where you are. You could sneak in some free time before they catch up with you.”

He smiled and responded to the teasing glint in her eyes. “You’re a bad influence, you know that?”

“I know. But haven’t you ever had a secret desire to leave everything behind? Run away and join the circus?”

“Me?” He shook his head and laughed. “Never.”

“Circus?” Eric’s head jerked up from his pancakes. “We saw a circus on television, didn’t we, Richie?”

His brother nodded eagerly. “Can we join one, Melissa?”

“Not today,” Melissa answered smoothly, as if the question were reasonable enough. “But I’m sure David will find something fun for you to do.”

“Thanks a lot,” David chided Melissa. With that kind of promise, what choice did he have but to live up to their expectations? “All right, you go do your thing at the library, and the boys and I will see what this little town has to offer three fellows on the loose.”

They left the café and went back to the hotel to feed Scruffy and put him on a leash. “Shall we meet back here at lunchtime?” she asked.

David nodded. “Okay, buckeroos, let’s hit the trial.”

Melissa couldn’t help but chuckle as she watched him head down the street with a dog and two boys clumping along beside him in cowboy boots and hats.
